Salmon & Sweet Potato Feast
Ingredients
- 2 lbs boneless, skinless salmon fillets
- 3 large sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs), peeled and cubed
- 1 cup brown rice, uncooked
- 1 cup frozen green beans, thawed
- 1/2 cup fresh spinach, chopped
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 4 cups water
- 1 large carrot, finely diced
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Rinse the brown rice and combine with 2 cups of water in a medium pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes until tender and water is absorbed.
- While rice cooks, steam or boil the sweet potato cubes until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash lightly, leaving some texture.
- In a large skillet, heat coconut oil over medium heat. Add salmon fillets and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until internal temperature reaches 145°F. Flake into bite-sized pieces, removing any bones.
- In the same skillet, sauté the diced carrot and green beans for 5 minutes until slightly softened. Add spinach and cook 1 minute more until wilted.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, mashed sweet potatoes, flaked salmon, sautéed vegetables, beaten eggs, and blueberries. Mix gently until evenly distributed.
- Allow the mixture to cool completely before portioning. The eggs will bind slightly as the mixture cools, helping maintain texture.
- Divide into daily portions based on your dog's weight and caloric needs. Store immediately or freeze for later use.
💊 Required Supplements
Add the following per 5 lbs of final prepared food: 1/2 teaspoon calcium carbonate powder (for bone health), 1/4 teaspoon iodized salt (for thyroid function), 200 IU vitamin E capsule (pierced and mixed in, for skin support), 1000mg fish oil capsule (pierced and mixed in, for omega-3 enhancement), and 1/4 teaspoon zinc supplement (for coat quality). Alternatively, add a complete canine vitamin-mineral powder at the manufacturer's recommended dosage for homemade diets.

🧊 Safety & Storage
Store prepared food in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator. Never leave prepared food at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Wash all produce thoroughly and ensure salmon is fully cooked to 145°F internal temperature. Always use clean utensils and containers to prevent bacterial contamination.
⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning
Do not substitute salmon with raw or smoked salmon due to parasite risk and sodium content. Avoid replacing sweet potato with white potato (nightshade sensitivity in some dogs) or regular rice with instant rice (nutritional differences). Do not omit the calcium supplement—without it, this recipe is dangerously low in calcium and will cause bone density loss over time. If substituting fish oil types, consult your veterinarian as omega-3 concentrations vary significantly between products.
