Salmon & Sweet Potato Feast

Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh or frozen boneless, skinless salmon fillets
  • 3 medium sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs), peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup frozen green peas
  • 1 cup chopped fresh spinach
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp iodized salt
  • 4 cups water (for cooking)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place salmon fillets on a lined baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes until internal temperature reaches 145°F. Let cool, then flake into bite-sized pieces, checking carefully for any missed bones.
  2. While salmon bakes, place cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot with 4 cups water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain, reserving 1 cup of cooking liquid.
  3. In a separate pot, steam frozen peas for 3-4 minutes until tender. Set aside.
  4. Roughly mash sweet potatoes, leaving some texture. Fold in flaked salmon, steamed peas, chopped spinach, ground flaxseed, olive oil, and salt.
  5. Add reserved sweet potato cooking liquid as needed to achieve desired consistency (moist but not soupy).
  6. Allow to cool completely to room temperature before serving. Store portions in airtight containers.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 5 lbs of final prepared food: 1/2 teaspoon calcium carbonate powder (approximately 600mg calcium), 100 IU vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol), and 1/4 teaspoon zinc methionine (approximately 25mg elemental zinc). Mix supplements thoroughly into cooled food before serving. Do not add supplements before cooking to preserve nutrient integrity.

This recipe provides excellent omega-3 fatty acid content from salmon (EPA/DHA) and flaxseed (ALA) to support skin barrier function and coat quality. The calcium-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1 meets NRC guidelines for adult dogs. Protein content at 35% DM supports lean muscle maintenance. Vitamin E and zinc supplementation enhance skin health benefits. Moisture content at 72% aids hydration. This recipe is complete and balanced only with the specified supplements—feeding without supplements will result in calcium and micronutrient deficiencies over time.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate portions in airtight containers for up to 4 days, or freeze in individual portions for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in refrigerator. Always serve at room temperature—never microwave. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw salmon. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Consult your veterinarian before transitioning to homemade food and schedule a nutritional check-up within 30 days.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute salmon with tuna, swordfish, or other large predatory fish due to mercury accumulation risk. Avoid replacing sweet potatoes with white potatoes (nightshade concerns when raw) or regular potatoes (different glycemic impact). Do not omit calcium supplementation—this recipe is calcium-deficient without it. Do not use garlic, onion, or chives as flavor enhancers as these are toxic to dogs. Substituting flaxseed with chia seeds requires dosage adjustment (use 1.5 tbsp chia instead). Never use macadamia nut oil or grapeseed oil as the fat source.
