Salmon & Sweet Potato Feast

Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless wild-caught salmon fillet, skin removed
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1.5 lbs), peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup peas, fresh or frozen
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 1 tablespoon fish oil (salmon or sardine oil)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup brown rice, uncooked

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse the brown rice and place it in a large pot with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes until tender.
  2. While rice cooks, steam or boil the sweet potato cubes for 15-20 minutes until soft enough to mash easily. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. In a separate pan, poach the salmon in simmering water for 10-12 minutes until cooked through and flaky. Remove any bones and break into small pieces.
  4. Steam the green beans and peas for 5-7 minutes until tender but still vibrant in color.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, flaked salmon, mashed sweet potatoes, green beans, and peas.
  6. Add the ground flaxseed and fish oil to the mixture, stirring thoroughly to distribute evenly.
  7. Allow the mixture to cool completely to room temperature before portioning.
  8. Divide into daily portions based on your dog's weight and store appropriately.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 4 lbs of prepared food: 500mg calcium carbonate (or 1/2 teaspoon eggshell powder), 200 IU vitamin E (dry powder or liquid), 1/4 teaspoon iodized salt, and a complete canine vitamin-mineral supplement per manufacturer instructions for adult maintenance. For a 25lb dog eating approximately 2 lbs of food daily, this equals 2000mg calcium carbonate, 800 IU vitamin E, 1 teaspoon salt, and full dose of chosen complete supplement.

This recipe provides excellent omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid ratios for skin and coat health, with EPA and DHA from salmon and ALA from flaxseed. The sweet potato delivers digestible complex carbohydrates and beta-carotene for skin cell turnover. Protein levels support adult maintenance without excess. The calcium-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1 meets AAFCO guidelines for adult dogs. This food is not complete and balanced without the specified supplements and should be used under veterinary supervision with regular nutritional assessments.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate fresh portions in airtight containers for up to 4 days. Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always serve at room temperature or slightly warmed. Discard any uneaten food after 2 hours. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw salmon.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute salmon with raw or smoked salmon due to parasite and sodium risks. Avoid white potatoes as they lack the nutritional benefits of sweet potatoes and may cause digestive upset. Do not replace fish oil with vegetable oils as the omega-3 profile will be inadequate for skin and coat health. Omitting the calcium supplement will create a dangerous calcium deficiency over time. Never use onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or xylitol-containing ingredients as these are toxic to dogs.
