Salmon & Sweet Potato Feast

Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless wild-caught salmon, skin on
  • 3 cups sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrots, diced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup brown rice, uncooked
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse brown rice and cook in 2 cups water until tender, about 30-35 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  2. Steam or boil sweet potatoes until fork-tender, approximately 15 minutes. Mash lightly and set aside.
  3. Poach salmon in remaining 2 cups water over medium heat for 12-15 minutes until internal temperature reaches 145°F. Remove skin and bones, then flake into bite-sized pieces.
  4. Steam green beans and carrots until soft, about 8-10 minutes. Chop into small pieces appropriate for your dog's size.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked rice, mashed sweet potatoes, flaked salmon, green beans, and carrots.
  6. Drizzle olive oil over mixture and fold gently to combine without breaking up salmon too finely.
  7. Stir in fresh parsley and allow to cool completely to room temperature before serving.
  8. Portion into individual servings based on your dog's weight and caloric needs.

💊 Required Supplements

Add per 5 lbs of prepared food: 1/4 tsp calcium carbonate powder (for bone health), 200 IU vitamin E (antioxidant support), 1/2 tsp iodized salt (iodine source). For skin and coat enhancement, add 1000mg fish oil (EPA/DHA) per 25 lbs of dog body weight daily. Mix supplements thoroughly into each serving immediately before feeding.

This recipe provides excellent omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio (approximately 1:2) for optimal skin barrier function and coat quality. Protein is highly digestible from marine sources. The calcium-phosphorus ratio meets NRC requirements for adult maintenance. Vitamin E works synergistically with fish oil to reduce oxidative stress. This diet is complete and balanced only when supplements are added as directed.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight containers in refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in refrigerator. Never microwave directly; warm to room temperature only. Always wash hands and surfaces after handling raw salmon. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute salmon with tilapia or catfish as omega-3 content will be insufficient for skin and coat benefits. Avoid replacing sweet potato with white potato due to different glycemic impact. Do not use onion, garlic, or chives as substitutes for parsley as these are toxic to dogs. If substituting protein, use sardines or mackerel to maintain omega-3 levels.
