Turkey & Quinoa Bowl

Weight Management

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs (680g) lean ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 cup (170g) cooked quinoa
  • 1 cup (150g) chopped green beans
  • 1 medium (120g) carrot, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup (75g) chopped spinach
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) canola oil
  • 4 cups (960ml) water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the canola oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the lean ground turkey and cook, breaking it into small crumbles, until fully browned and no longer pink (about 8-10 minutes). Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the 4 cups of water to the pot with the cooked turkey and bring to a boil.
  4. Stir in the quinoa, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped green beans and carrots, and continue to simmer for another 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and the quinoa is fully cooked.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the chopped spinach until wilted. Let the mixture cool completely before serving.
  7. Portion the cooled food according to your dog's daily caloric needs. Any unused portions should be stored immediately.

This recipe is formulated for weight management with a high protein-to-calorie ratio (38% DM) to support lean muscle mass while promoting satiety. The moderate fat content (16% DM) and higher fiber (6% DM) help control calories while maintaining fullness. The 1.3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is within the optimal range for adult dogs. Note that this is a complementary diet and must be supplemented as directed with calcium, essential fatty acids, and trace minerals to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult maintenance. Always consult with a veterinary nutritionist before feeding as a complete diet.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Always handle raw meat safely; wash hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly with soap and hot water after contact. Let the food cool to room temperature before serving to prevent burns. Store leftovers in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2-3 months. Thaw frozen portions in the refrigerator overnight. Never leave prepared food at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Always provide fresh, clean water alongside meals.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute ingredients without careful consideration, as this can alter the calorie balance and nutrient profile. Avoid replacing turkey with fattier meats like beef or lamb, as this will significantly increase calorie density and undermine weight management goals. Do not use onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, or xylitol-containing ingredients, as these are toxic to dogs. Quinoa should not be replaced with higher-carb grains like white rice or pasta, as this increases glycemic load. Always consult your veterinarian before making significant recipe adjustments or if your dog has specific health conditions.
