Tuna & Sardine Pate

General

Ingredients

  • 200g fresh tuna steak, diced
  • 100g sardines in water (no salt added), drained
  • 50g chicken liver, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup water or low-sodium fish stock
  • 1 teaspoon bone meal powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon iodized salt
  • 400mg taurine powder
  • 1 capsule vitamin E (400 IU)
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried kelp powder

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer and poach the diced tuna for 8-10 minutes until cooked through. Drain and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, gently simmer the chicken liver for 10 minutes until fully cooked (no pink remaining). Drain and cool slightly.
  3. Combine the cooked tuna, sardines with bones included (for calcium), cooked liver, and olive oil in a mixing bowl.
  4. Add the water or fish stock to achieve desired pâté consistency.
  5. While the mixture is still warm, stir in the bone meal powder, iodized salt, taurine powder, and kelp powder until evenly distributed.
  6. Pierce the vitamin E capsule and squeeze the oil into the mixture, then stir thoroughly.
  7. Using a fork or immersion blender, mash or blend the ingredients into a smooth pâté texture.
  8. Portion into daily servings and store appropriately.

💊 Required Supplements

Add 400mg taurine powder per batch (essential for feline heart and eye health), 400 IU vitamin E capsule per batch (antioxidant support), 1 teaspoon bone meal powder per batch (calcium source), and 1/8 teaspoon kelp powder per batch (iodine source). Do not substitute or omit taurine as deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration in cats.

This recipe provides high-quality animal protein at 52% dry matter, appropriate for obligate carnivores. The fat content at 23% DM supports energy needs without excess. Carbohydrates are minimal at 3% DM, reflecting natural feline dietary patterns. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.4:1 falls within the recommended 1.1-1.5:1 range for adult cats. Moisture content supports urinary health. Note that homemade diets should be reviewed by a veterinary nutritionist every 6 months and blood work monitored annually to ensure nutritional adequacy.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in ice cube trays for up to 2 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator. Never leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Always use fresh, high-quality fish and cook thoroughly to eliminate parasites. Consult your veterinarian before transitioning to homemade food, especially for cats with kidney or urinary issues due to the high phosphorus content in fish.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute tuna with raw fish due to thiaminase and parasite risks. Do not replace sardines with larger fish like swordfish or shark due to mercury accumulation. Do not omit taurine supplementation—this is non-negotiable for cats. Avoid onions, garlic, grapes, and excessive salt. Substituting liver with other meats will alter the vitamin A and copper profile. This recipe is formulated for adult cats only—kittens and pregnant queens have different nutritional requirements.
