Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef stew meat (lean, cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 1 lb chicken thighs (boneless, skinless, diced)
  • 2 cups beef bone broth (low sodium, homemade preferred)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sweet potato (peeled and cubed, ~150g)
  • 1 cup butternut squash (peeled and cubed, ~140g)
  • 1 cup green beans (fresh or frozen, chopped, ~100g)
  • 1 cup spinach (fresh, chopped, ~30g)
  • 2 tbsp wild-caught salmon oil
  • 1 tbsp ground turmeric (or 2 inches fresh turmeric root, grated)
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger (or 1 inch fresh ginger, grated)
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 cup brown rice (uncooked, ~185g)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen, ~75g)
  • 1/4 cup bone meal powder (food-grade)
  • 2 sardines (canned in water, drained and mashed, ~100g)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Place the bone broth and water in a large pot over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Add the brown rice and cook for 15 minutes until partially tender.
  3. Add the sweet potato and butternut squash cubes, stirring gently, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Add the beef stew meat and diced chicken thighs to the pot. Simmer for 20-25 minutes until the meat is cooked through and the vegetables are soft and easily mashed.
  5. Stir in the green beans and cook for an additional 5 minutes until tender but not mushy.
  6. Remove the pot from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  7. Fold in the spinach, ground turmeric, ground ginger, and ground flaxseed, stirring until the spinach wilts from residual heat.
  8. Gently fold in the mashed sardines and blueberries, being careful not to crush the berries completely.
  9. Drizzle the salmon oil over the stew and stir gently to combine.
  10. Allow the stew to cool completely to room temperature before serving or storing.
  11. Portion into individual servings based on your dog's weight and caloric needs.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 5 lbs of total food weight: 500mg glucosamine HCl powder, 400mg chondroitin sulfate powder, 100mg MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), and 1/4 teaspoon food-grade bone meal powder (providing approximately 500mg calcium). Mix supplements into the cooled stew immediately before serving. Do not add supplements during cooking as heat degrades glucosamine and chondroitin efficacy. For dogs over 50 lbs, scale proportionally: add 100mg glucosamine, 80mg chondroitin, and 20mg MSM per additional 5 lbs of food.

This recipe provides a protein-dense, moderate-fat formulation appropriate for senior dogs with joint concerns. The 1.3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio supports bone health without overburdening aging kidneys. Glucosamine from bone broth and supplements targets cartilage repair, while turmeric and ginger provide natural anti-inflammatory benefits. The 18% fat content from salmon oil and lean meats supplies omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) for joint lubrication and cognitive support. The 6% fiber content from vegetables and flaxseed promotes digestive regularity common in senior dogs. This recipe is not complete and balanced as a sole diet without the specified supplements; it is designed to be fed as 50% of daily caloric intake alongside a commercial senior diet, or with veterinary supervision as a complete diet with the listed supplements.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight glass or BPA-free containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze individual portions in silicone molds or freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Reheat gently to lukewarm (not hot) before serving. Always wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw meat. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Consult your veterinarian before introducing this recipe, especially if your dog has kidney disease, pancreatitis, or is on blood thinners (turmeric and ginger may interact with anticoagulant medications).

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute the bone meal powder with eggshell powder without recalculating calcium content, as this will alter the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio critical for senior dogs. Avoid replacing salmon oil with cod liver oil due to excessive vitamin A and D levels. Do not use regular table salt or seasoned broths. Sweet potato and butternut squash are not interchangeable with white potato (nightshade concerns) or pumpkin (different fiber profile). Turmeric should not be replaced with curry powder, which may contain toxic garlic and onion powder. If substituting proteins, maintain a 50/50 red meat to poultry ratio to preserve amino acid balance.
