Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1/2 lb beef liver, diced small
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 1 cup sweet potato, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup chopped green beans
  • 1 cup chopped spinach
  • 1 tbsp ground eggshell (for calcium)
  • 2 tbsp sardines packed in water, drained and mashed (boneless/skinless)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cups low-sodium bone broth (or water)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse brown rice and add to a large pot with 3 cups of bone broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes until tender.
  2. While rice cooks, brown the ground turkey in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into small crumbles. Cook until no pink remains, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add diced beef liver to the turkey and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until cooked through. Remove from heat.
  4. Add sweet potato cubes to the simmering rice during the last 15 minutes of cooking to soften.
  5. Once rice and sweet potato are tender, stir in the turkey-liver mixture, chopped green beans, and spinach. Cook for 5 more minutes until vegetables are soft.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool to lukewarm. Fold in mashed sardines, ground flaxseed, olive oil, and blueberries.
  7. Sprinkle ground eggshell evenly over the stew and stir gently to distribute. The residual heat will sanitize the eggshell.
  8. Allow to cool completely before portioning. The stew should be at room temperature or slightly warm when serving.

💊 Required Supplements

For a 25 lb dog: Add 1/2 teaspoon glucosamine HCl (500mg), 1/4 teaspoon chondroitin sulfate (250mg), and 1/8 teaspoon MSM (125mg) per serving. Alternatively, use a veterinary joint supplement at the labeled dose for a 25 lb dog, sprinkled over food at mealtime. Add 1/4 teaspoon fish oil (providing approximately 200mg combined EPA/DHA) per serving. All supplements should be added after cooking to preserve potency.

This recipe provides approximately 420 kcal per cup, suitable as a complete meal for a moderately active 25 lb senior dog requiring 2 meals daily. The protein level of 38% DM supports lean muscle maintenance in aging dogs while being gentle on kidneys. The 1.3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio meets NRC minimums for senior dogs and supports bone health. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM are included at therapeutic doses shown to support cartilage health and reduce inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids from sardines, flaxseed, and fish oil provide anti-inflammatory benefits. The moderate fat content (18% DM) helps prevent weight gain common in senior dogs. This recipe is not suitable for dogs with chronic kidney disease due to phosphorus content—consult your veterinarian for renal-appropriate modifications.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always serve at room temperature or slightly warm; never serve hot. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw meat. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Consult your veterinarian before introducing this recipe, especially if your dog has liver conditions, pancreatica, or is on medications. This recipe is formulated as a complete meal when supplements are added as directed.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute beef liver with other organ meats without adjusting portions, as liver is critical for vitamin A and copper content that balances this recipe. Avoid replacing sweet potato with white potato (nightshade concerns for joint inflammation) or adding onions, garlic, grapes, or raisins which are toxic to dogs. Do not substitute ground eggshell with calcium carbonate powder without recalculating dosage (1 tbsp eggshell ≈ 1,000mg calcium). Do not replace sardines with tuna due to mercury concerns. If turkey is unavailable, use lean ground chicken but increase olive oil to 1.5 tablespoons to maintain fat content. Always recalculate calcium-phosphorus ratios if making any substitutions.
