Puppy Growth Formula

General

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 cup brown rice (uncooked)
  • 1 medium sweet potato (diced, about 1.5 cups)
  • 1 cup finely chopped spinach
  • 1/2 cup grated carrots
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cups water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over high heat.
  2. Add the brown rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes until tender.
  3. In a separate large skillet, brown the ground turkey over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles, until fully cooked with no pink remaining.
  4. Add the diced sweet potato and grated carrots to the rice pot during the last 15 minutes of cooking, allowing them to soften together.
  5. Once the rice and vegetables are tender, add the cooked turkey, chopped spinach, and ground flaxseed to the pot.
  6. Stir in the olive oil and mix thoroughly until the spinach is wilted and all ingredients are well combined.
  7. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely to room temperature before serving or portioning.
  8. Divide into daily portions based on your puppy's weight and store appropriately.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 5 lbs of prepared food: 1/2 tsp calcium carbonate powder (for bone development), 1/4 tsp iodized salt (for thyroid support), 1/2 adult-dose puppy multivitamin with DHA (crumbled or liquid), and 1/4 tsp zinc methionine powder. Mix supplements into each individual meal immediately before serving to preserve potency. Do not add supplements to the entire batch at once.

This recipe provides complete nutrition for growing puppies when supplemented as directed, with protein and fat levels supporting healthy weight gain and muscle development. The calcium-phosphorus ratio of 1.33:1 falls within the recommended 1.2-1.5:1 range for skeletal development. DHA from the multigrain supplement supports brain and eye development. This diet meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for growth when properly supplemented. Regular veterinary monitoring including weight checks and bloodwork is recommended every 4-6 weeks during the first year.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate portions in airtight containers for up to 4 days, or freeze in daily portions for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw meat. Monitor your puppy's weight weekly and adjust portions as directed by your veterinarian.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute ground turkey with ground beef or lamb without recalculating fat content, as excess fat can cause digestive upset and improper weight gain in puppies. Do NOT replace brown rice with white rice (lacks nutrients) or quinoa (different caloric density). Do NOT omit the calcium carbonate supplement, as homemade diets are inherently calcium-deficient and puppies require precise calcium-phosphorus ratios for proper skeletal development. Any substitution requires complete nutritional recalculation by a veterinary nutritionist.
