Puppy Growth Formula

General

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 cup brown rice (uncooked)
  • 1 cup sweet potato, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup carrots, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp fish oil (salmon or sardine-based)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk Greek yogurt
  • 4 cups water (for rice and turkey)
  • 2 large eggs (cooked, mashed)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse brown rice and cook in 4 cups of water according to package directions (approximately 45 minutes). Set aside to cool.
  2. In a large pot, brown the ground turkey over medium heat, breaking it into small crumbles. Cook until no pink remains (approximately 8-10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  3. While turkey cooks, peel and dice sweet potato into 1/4-inch cubes. Steam or boil until fork-tender (approximately 10-12 minutes). Mash lightly.
  4. Add diced carrots to the turkey during the last 3 minutes of cooking to soften slightly.
  5. Combine cooked rice, turkey with carrots, mashed sweet potato, and frozen peas in a large mixing bowl. Stir until evenly distributed.
  6. Allow mixture to cool to room temperature (approximately 15-20 minutes). Add ground flaxseed, fish oil, and Greek yogurt. Mix thoroughly.
  7. Cook eggs by hard-boiling, then mash and fold into the cooled mixture.
  8. Portion into daily servings and refrigerate immediately.

For puppies under 6 months, add 1/8 tsp zinc picolinate. Always consult your veterinarian before adding supplements.

This recipe provides a balanced macronutrient profile suitable for growing puppies, with 35% protein on a dry matter basis to support muscle development and 15% fat for energy and brain health. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1 meets AAFCO guidelines for growth. DHA from fish oil supports cognitive and visual development. The recipe is calorie-dense to meet high energy demands of puppies. However, homemade diets should always be reviewed by a veterinary nutritionist to ensure breed-specific needs are met, and supplementation is adjusted based on puppy size and breed.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate portions in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in silicone molds or small containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator. Never leave food out for more than 30 minutes. Wash all surfaces and utensils with hot soapy water after preparation. Always use fresh, high-quality ingredients and check for recalls on commercial items.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute ground turkey with beef or lamb without adjusting fat content. Do not replace brown rice with white rice (lacks nutrients) or quinoa without recalculating calcium ratios. Avoid adding onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, or xylitol-containing ingredients as these are toxic to dogs. Do not use artificial sweeteners. Any substitution may alter the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, which is critical for puppy bone development. Consult a veterinary nutritionist before making ingredient changes.
