Chicken & Rice Delight

General

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs (900g) boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 1.5 cups (275g) uncooked brown rice
  • 1 cup (150g) chopped carrots
  • 1 cup (130g) chopped green beans
  • 1/2 cup (75g) chopped spinach
  • 2 tbsp (28g) olive oil
  • 4 cups (960ml) water or low-sodium chicken broth

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse brown rice thoroughly and combine with water or broth in a large pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 35-40 minutes until tender.
  2. While rice cooks, dice chicken breast into small, bite-sized pieces (approximately 1/2 inch cubes).
  3. In a separate large skillet, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium heat. Cook chicken pieces for 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Do not season.
  4. In the final 5 minutes of rice cooking, add chopped carrots and green beans directly to the rice pot to steam-cook.
  5. Once chicken is cooked, let it rest for 5 minutes, then shred or finely chop to ensure uniform texture.
  6. Fold cooked chicken, steamed vegetables, and raw spinach into the cooked rice. The residual heat will wilt the spinach.
  7. Add remaining 1 tbsp olive oil and mix thoroughly. Allow to cool completely to room temperature before portioning.
  8. Divide into daily portions based on your dog's weight and caloric needs. Store immediately.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 5 lbs of prepared food (approximately 1 cup): 1/4 tsp calcium carbonate powder (provides ~400mg calcium), 1/8 tsp iodized salt (for iodine and sodium), 1/2 tsp fish oil (providing ~500mg EPA/DHA), 1/4 tsp zinc gluconate powder (~25mg zinc), and a complete canine vitamin-mineral supplement per manufacturer's weight-based dosing. Consult your veterinarian to adjust based on your dog's specific needs.

This recipe provides high-quality animal protein from chicken breast with moderate fat content suitable for weight maintenance in adult dogs. The brown rice and vegetables contribute digestible carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and phytonutrients. Added fish oil supports skin, coat, and joint health with omega-3 fatty acids. Calcium carbonate supplementation is critical—homemade diets are typically calcium-deficient without it. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately 1.15:1 falls within the acceptable range of 1:1 to 2:1 for adult dogs. Regular veterinary blood work monitoring is recommended every 6 months to ensure nutritional adequacy.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate in airtight glass containers for up to 4 days, or freeze individual portions in BPA-free containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always serve at room temperature—never microwave. Discard any food left uneaten after 2 hours. Wash all preparation surfaces and utensils with hot, soapy food-safe sanitizer.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute chicken with dark meat or skin without recalculating fat content—this can cause pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. Do not replace brown rice with white rice or grains without adjusting fiber and carbohydrate profiles. Avoid onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, xylitol, and chocolate as additions. Any protein or vegetable substitution requires veterinary nutritional recalculation to maintain balance.
