Understanding Extreme Food Allergies in Dogs
Dogs with extreme allergies often react to common proteins like chicken and beef. Rabbit is a novel protein, rarely causing sensitivities. Pear adds natural sweetness and fiber without triggering allergies. This recipe is grain-free and uses limited ingredients to minimize reactions.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground rabbit (or rabbit meat, finely chopped)
- 1 medium pear (about 150g), cored and diced (no seeds)
- 1 cup (150g) cooked sweet potato, mashed
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon (1g) powdered eggshell calcium (or 500mg calcium carbonate)
Instructions
- In a skillet, cook ground rabbit over medium heat until fully cooked (about 10 minutes). No need to drain if using lean rabbit.
- Add diced pear and cook for 3 minutes until slightly softened.
- Stir in mashed sweet potato, olive oil, and calcium supplement. Mix thoroughly.
- Let cool. Serve at room temperature. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Feeding Guidelines
For a 20 lb dog, feed about 1/2 cup per meal, twice daily. Adjust portion size based on your dog's weight and energy needs. Introduce slowly over 5-7 days to monitor for any adverse reactions.
Important: Always consult with a veterinary nutritionist before starting a novel protein diet, especially for dogs with severe allergies.
