Omega-3 for Dog Heart Health: What I Learned the Hard Way
Last year, my vet said something that made me forget what I was mid-sentence about: "Your dog's heart is working harder than you think."
Cooper — my 8-year-old golden retriever, the kind of dog who acts like a puppy until he doesn't — had just been diagnosed with early-stage mitral valve disease. I stood there in the exam room, his head resting on my knee, and my brain just... stopped.
That conversation sent me down a research hole I didn't climb out of for months. But the single biggest change I made — the one that actually moved the needle — was adding omega-3 fatty acids to Cooper's diet. Not as a casual afterthought. As a deliberate, daily priority.

Why I Started Taking Fish Oil Seriously

They also make red blood cells more flexible — which means oxygen gets delivered to the heart muscle more efficiently. I think of it like upgrading the fuel line while also reducing the engine knock. Both things matter.
The Source Matters More Than You Think (I Wasted Money Finding This Out)
Here's where I burned cash so you don't have to. My first move was buying a generic flaxseed oil from the pet store shelf. Two months of daily dosing. Almost zero results.
Turns out dogs are terrible at converting ALA — the omega-3 in flaxseed — into the DHA their hearts actually need. We're talking maybe 5-15% conversion. I might as well have been drizzling it on his kibble for the taste.
Here's what actually works, ranked by how well your dog can absorb it:
- Wild-caught fish oil (salmon, sardine, anchovy) — This is the gold standard. High EPA/DHA content, and the form is easy for dogs to absorb. If your dog has a diagnosed heart condition, start here.
- Krill oil — Slightly lower EPA/DHA, but it comes in a phospholipid form that absorbs even faster. Great for senior dogs or small breeds where you want maximum impact from a smaller dose.
- Green-lipped mussel oil — A solid middle ground, and it contains a unique fatty acid called ETA that you won't find in fish oil. I've heard from a few owners whose dogs have both joint and heart issues that this one hits both targets.
- Flaxseed/algae oil — Honestly? Only useful as a budget maintenance option if your dog is healthy. Don't rely on it for therapeutic effect.
How Much Is Actually Enough?
This is where I got it wrong at first. I assumed more = better. It doesn't.
For dogs with heart disease, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine suggests somewhere around 75-100 mg of combined EPA+DHA per kilogram of body weight per day. For healthy dogs, 50-75 mg/kg/day is a reasonable maintenance target.
Cooper weighs about 32 kg, so I was looking at roughly 2,400-3,200 mg of combined EPA+DHA daily. I started him on the lower end and crept up over two weeks — learned the hard way that dumping a full dose into a golden retriever's breakfast is a recipe for... let's just say unpleasant surprises on the living room carpet.
A rough guide by size:
- Small dogs (under 10 kg): 500-750 mg EPA+DHA daily
- Medium dogs (10-25 kg): 1,000-2,000 mg daily
- Large dogs (25-40 kg): 2,000-3,500 mg daily
- Giant breeds (40+ kg): 3,500-5,000 mg daily
One more thing — split the dose between morning and evening meals. Better absorption, and it cuts down on the fishy burps that made my kitchen smell like a dock at low tide for the first few weeks.
Feeding Omega-3s Without Relying on Capsules
Once I understood the science, I started building Cooper's meals around whole-food sources. Supplements still play a role — I use a high-quality wild salmon oil as a daily topper — but real food does a lot of the heavy lifting.
My Sunday meal prep is a salmon and sweet potato bowl that lands around 1,800 mg of EPA+DHA per serving. I batch-cook it, portion it out, and it carries us through most of the week.
Three toppers I rotate through:
- Sardines in water, no salt added. One small sardine per 10 kg of body weight, a few times a week. Each one packs roughly 1,000-1,500 mg of EPA+DHA. Cooper loses his mind over them — I'm talking full-body wiggles before I even open the can.
- Wild salmon oil drizzled at mealtime. One teaspoon for medium-to-large dogs. I use a product sourced from wild Alaskan salmon because sourcing matters — purity and potency vary wildly between brands.
- Hempseed oil. Decent ALA content and a nice omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, but I only use it alongside a direct EPA/DHA source since conversion rates in dogs are limited.
If you're going the homemade route, make sure you're hitting all the nutritional targets — omega-3s are one piece, but they're not the whole puzzle.
What I'd Do Differently
Three mistakes I'd skip if I could start over.
First: those two wasted months on flaxseed oil. ALA-to-DHA conversion in dogs is a rounding error. Go straight to marine sources.
Second: I didn't check for heavy metal contamination in my first fish oil brand. Now I look for third-party testing and sourcing transparency. It's not the place to bargain-hunt.
Third: I went to full dose on day one. Loose stools for a week. Start low, go slow. Your dog's gut will thank you.
Where Cooper Is Now
His latest echocardiogram showed stable disease — no progression. His cardiologist called it "the best-case scenario," and I'm not ashamed to say I cried in the parking lot.
I'm not claiming omega-3s cured anything. Cooper is still on his cardiac medications. He's still eating a low-sodium homemade diet. We still see the cardiologist every six months.
