Omega-3 for Cat Heart Health: What I Learned the Hard Way

My 9-year-old tabby, Mochi, was diagnosed with early-stage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy two years ago. I remember sitting in the exam room, bracing for a conversation about medications and prognosis. Instead, the cardiologist asked me what she ate. Not in a general, how's-her-appetite way — she wanted specifics. Was Mochi getting enough omega-3 fatty acids?

I blinked. I'd been grinding chicken thighs and sweet potatoes into homemade meals for years, genuinely proud of the effort. But I'd completely overlooked the one nutrient my cat's heart apparently needed most.

That appointment sent me down a rabbit hole I'm still in. Here's what I wish someone had told me sooner.

Why Omega-3s Matter for Your Cat's Heart

Cats are obligate carnivores — their bodies run on animal-based nutrients. Simple enough. What I didn't realize is that they can't efficiently produce the long-chain omega-3s EPA and DHA on their own. They have to get them directly from food, and most homemade cat food recipes (mine included) don't account for that.

Research out of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine tracked cats with cardiac disease who received supplemental omega-3s over 12 months. The ones getting EPA and DHA showed reduced inflammation markers and better clinical outcomes. Those fatty acids work by dialing down inflammatory cytokines, stabilizing heart rhythm, and helping to lower blood pressure — all huge factors when you're managing feline heart disease.

A 2021 study found a 24% reduction in cardiac inflammation markers for cats on omega-3-enriched diets compared to controls. The National Research Council sets the minimum at 0.5% EPA+DHA on a dry matter basis for adult cats, but plenty of veterinary cardiologists push for significantly higher levels once a heart condition is in the picture.

Small, oily fish like sardines and mackerel pack roughly 1,000–1,500 mg of EPA+DHA per 100g. That makes them some of the most bioavailable sources out there. If you're formulating homemade food, these numbers matter — a lot.

Best Omega-3 Sources for Cats

I spent weeks comparing options after Mochi's diagnosis. Not everything marketed as "omega-3" actually does much for cats.

Wild sardines (canned in water, no salt added) are the MVP. Around 1,400 mg EPA+DHA per 100g, incredibly bioavailable, cheap, and most cats devour them. This became my daily go-to.

Mackerel is a close second — about 1,000 mg per 100g. I rotate it in as a protein source a couple times a week.

Wild-caught salmon is great in theory (~1,800 mg/100g), but it's pricier and I treat it more as an occasional addition than a staple.

High-quality liquid fish oil works well when you need precise dosing. Just make sure whatever you buy has been tested for heavy metals — cats are small, and toxins accumulate fast at their body weight.

Then there's flaxseed oil. I see people recommend it for pets constantly. Here's the problem: cats can't efficiently convert ALA (plant-based omega-3) into the EPA and DHA their hearts actually use. Their delta-6 desaturase enzyme activity is extremely limited. That flaxseed oil you drizzle on your own salad? It's doing almost nothing for your cat. Stick with marine-based sources.

I started adding one small sardine — maybe 8 or 10 grams — to Mochi's evening meal three times a week. Took ten seconds, cost about fifteen cents, and she went absolutely nuts for it. How Much Does Your Cat Actually Need?

This is where I see well-meaning pet owners (myself included, at first) trip up. More isn't automatically better.

For a healthy 10-pound cat, most veterinary nutritionists recommend roughly 30–60 mg of combined EPA+DHA per kg of body weight daily. If a cardiac condition is in the picture, that can go up to around 100 mg/kg/day — but only under veterinary supervision.

For a 10-pound cat, that translates to roughly 135–270 mg per day. One small sardine gives you about 150–200 mg. So two or three sardines spread across the week, as part of a balanced diet, can make a real dent.

But here's the part that tripped me up: omega-3 supplementation has to exist within a complete diet. Throwing fish into an already unbalanced homemade recipe can wreck your calcium-to-phosphorus ratio or push vitamin D too high. Start small. Half a sardine, two or three times a week. Make sure the overall recipe holds together nutritionally — not just the omega-3 piece.

What Actually Worked for Us

After a year of trial and error, these are the strategies that stuck.

The sardine shortcut. Canned sardines in water, no salt added. Mash one into the evening meal. Done. It's my weeknight default because it's fast, cheap, and Mochi acts like I've handed her a gold bar.

Fish oil as backup. Some cats won't touch fish — I know, it's shocking. A wild-caught fish oil drizzled over food works fine instead. Just double-check that heavy metal testing I mentioned earlier.

Add fish after cooking. This one's important. Omega-3s are highly susceptible to oxidation, and heat degrades EPA and DHA significantly. If you're batch-cooking, stir the fish or fish oil in once everything's cooled down. Store fish oil in the fridge and use it within 90 days of opening.

Two Years Later

Mochi's last echocardiogram showed stable disease. No progression. Her cardiologist credits a combination of medication, weight management, and — yes — the improved omega-3 intake.

I'm not claiming sardines cured anything. That would be irresponsible. But understanding what EPA and DHA actually do for a cat's heart gave me something I desperately needed after that diagnosis: agency. Instead of sitting there feeling helpless, I could actively support her every single day through the food I prepared.
