Omega-3 for Cats: What Actually Fixed My Cat's Coat
My vet took one look at Mochi during her first checkup and asked what I was feeding her. Not in a judgmental way — more like genuine curiosity. Her coat was dull and flaky, her skin looked irritated, and I remember feeling defensive because I'd spent weeks researching homemade diets. High protein, fresh ingredients, all the things you're supposed to do. But I was missing something pretty important: omega-3 fatty acids.
It wasn't a dramatic overnight fix. I started mixing a little salmon oil into her food, and after maybe six or seven weeks — long enough that I'd almost given up — her coat finally started looking different. Less like straw, more like... well, like a cat's coat is supposed to look. So naturally I fell down a research hole trying to understand why. Here's what I've picked up since then.
Why Your Cat's Body Is Begging for Omega-3s
Cats can't make essential fatty acids on their own. They have to get them from food, and omega-3s — a type of polyunsaturated fat — do a lot more than most people realize. Skin and coat health, sure, but also inflammation control and brain function.
You'll see three main types floating around in the research:
- ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) — comes from plants like flaxseed
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) — from marine sources
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — also marine-based, and important for brain and eye health
Here's the catch with cats specifically. They're obligate carnivores, which means they're terrible at converting plant-based ALA into the EPA and DHA they actually need. Fish and krill deliver those directly, which is why flaxseed oil — despite being trendy — often disappoints when you're chasing real coat improvements.
The practical stuff omega-3s help with:
- Calming skin inflammation and itchiness
- Adding actual shine and softness to fur
- Strengthening the skin barrier
- Cutting down on dander and dry flakes
If your cat's coat is dull or flaky and you're feeding homemade food, omega-3s are probably the gap in your recipe. That was definitely the case for me.
Which Sources Actually Work (and Which Ones Don't)
Not all omega-3s are created equal — especially for cats. I learned this the hard way after buying a flaxseed oil that did basically nothing.
Wild salmon or salmon oil is the one with the most research behind it. Sardines and mackerel are great too, and they're low in mercury since they're small oily fish. Krill oil comes in a phospholipid form that's supposedly easier to absorb, and it shows up in a lot of pricier supplements. Flaxseed and hemp seed oil? They have ALA, and hemp adds some GLA too, but cats just don't convert them efficiently. They're fine as a supplement to something better, but don't rely on them as your main source.
If you're making homemade cat food, marine sources are where it's at. Salmon and sardines are the gold standard.
So How Much Do You Actually Give?
This tripped me up because there's no single official dose for every cat. The National Research Council suggests roughly 0.5% to 1.0% of dry matter as EPA plus DHA for adult cats. For homemade diets, that usually shakes out to something like:
- Small cats (5–7 lbs): around 100–200 mg EPA+DHA per day
- Medium cats (8–12 lbs): 200–400 mg per day
- Larger cats (13+ lbs): 400–600 mg per day
A teaspoon of decent salmon oil packs about 1,000–1,500 mg of EPA+DHA, so you genuinely don't need much. If you're also tossing sardines into meals, you might already be closer than you think.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough: balance omega-3s with omega-6s. Chicken fat, sunflower oil, and a lot of commercial ingredients are loaded with omega-6s. The ratio matters for keeping inflammation in check, not just the absolute amounts.
How I Actually Add Omega-3s to Mochi's Food
Once I had the numbers figured out, I started playing around with real recipes. These are the approaches that stuck.
Oily fish in the rotation. Canned sardines in water — no salt, no oil — or cooked salmon. I use maybe a quarter to half a small sardine a few times a week, or a teaspoon or two of flaked salmon per meal. It's the simplest way to do it.
A bottle of good fish oil for lazy days. When I don't feel like dealing with actual fish, I drizzle salmon oil or sardine oil over her food. A few things I look for now: third-party testing for heavy metals, EPA and DHA actually listed on the label (not just "fish oil"), and no added flavors or synthetic preservatives. I started with about an eighth of a teaspoon and worked up slowly because too much too fast can upset their stomach.
Rotate proteins instead of feeding chicken every single meal. Salmon, sardines, mackerel, trout — switching things up gives your cat a broader nutrient profile and keeps meals from getting boring. Mochi definitely has opinions about variety.
You don't need expensive supplements. Real fish and a decent bottle of fish oil, used consistently, can make a visible difference.
How Long Before You Actually See Results?
This was the first thing I asked my vet, and honestly her answer was less exciting than I wanted. Skin cells and hair follicles take time to renew. Most cat parents start noticing softer fur and less static around the two-to-four-week mark. The real shine and reduced dryness? That's more like six to eight weeks in.
Consistency is everything. Omega-3s work when they're a regular part of the diet, not something you remember to add every few days.
Give it at least six to eight weeks of daily use before you decide whether it's working. Coat changes are slow but they're real — I can vouch for that.
